Message right on. I appreciate your thorough and technical checks. The whine occurs in most gear set ups (right at where you and Ryan describe), and then usually goes away after (about 500-1,000) miles. A few keep a slight whine at specific loads. For anyone thinking of doing the swap or that has done it, and the shop says, "Richmond Gears are known to whine", this is the acceptable amount. A howling rear end (while painful) is indicative off an incorrect install either due to improper pinion depth, or most likely incorrect backlash set up. I would recommend changing the diff. fluid, as part of the break in procedure seems to take a miniscule amount of material off the gears, and darken the fluid. The fluid I recommend is the Richmond Gear 75-140. It is rated at a GL6, is advertised as having a high shock absorption quality and high ability to disipate heat (less heat, more HP). I'm sure the Redline or Royal Purple GL5 diff. fluid is fine, but I go with compatibiltiy with the manufacturer. Since our LSDs are enclosed and don't share fluid with the rest of the diff., the main parts of concern are the hard parts. One last thing.....STAND ON IT! You broke 'em in and they won't break. The shop that does the installs in SoCal (they do only high end differential work) said that the R230 diff. and it's related hard parts (gears, bearings, etc.) said they are as stout or stouterer than a Ford 9". STAND ON IT! Hope you enjoy the ride and thanks for the feedback, Mark
